Raymond D Godeke, Foundation Secretary

The CALIFORNIA SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION was incorporated on 1958 for the purpose of conducting the following three avenues of aid we offer our youth:

  • Aphasia and Dyslexia
Children with these language disorders are taught under expert therapists to speak, read, and write.
  • Dynamic Freedoms
Under our Great American Fundamentals program, we distribute to public schools without cost our Supreme Council's history books called Dynamic Freedoms.
  • Student Aid
Young men and women can apply to the Foundation for a grant to pursue their education at university and graduate level. There is also scholastic aid at individual Valleys.

The CALIFORNIA SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION is a non-profit public benefit corporation and is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is organized under the California Non-Profit Benefit Corporation Law for general charitable and educational purposes.

The CALIFORNIA SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION is dedicated to support and assist the children in California develop their full potential by providing childhood language services, scholarships and other general charitable and educational programs.

Childhood Language Centers

The CALIFORNIA SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION has, for years, been offering treatment to children who suffer from speech disorders. In the fourteen Centers supported by the Foundation throughout California, we serve approximately 650 children each month and provide over 40,000 hours of therapy and evaluation services each year. The annual cost to provide these services is over $3,200,000. All these services are provided at no cost to the families of the children. Since 1962, over $43,000,000 has been expended in providing these services.

Scholarships for Undergraduates and Graduate Study

Another major service provided by the Foundation are the Scholarships that are provided to the children of California. These are offered for undergraduate and specific graduate school courses of study. These awards are given annually with many of them being continuing awards until the student graduates. Over a thousand students have been helped by this Foundation program with over $4,150,000 in scholarships having been awarded since the programs' inception in 1959. We have recently increased the amount of the individual scholarships in recognition of the increased cost of education.

These philanthropies are "what we do" and have been made possible by the faithful donations, bequests and other support from people like you. It is our goal to increase the services currently provided. We are seeking a 25% increase in the number of Scholarships awarded annually and a 20% increase in the children served by our Language Centers. We hope to reach these targets within 5 years.

With your help, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of the Children and our great Country.

The pride that we feel with the successful history of our Foundation and its programs of Childhood Speech and Language Centers, Scholarship Awards, and the Americanism Program is part of "who we are". We are all facing challenges with the current economic environment. Please remember, however, that the needs of the children we serve do not go away simply because times are tough.

Aphasia and Dyslexia

Grand Commander Emeritus Henry C. Clausen founded our first California aphasia clinic in 1962. Thanks to your faithful donations and bequests, over $40,000,000.00 has been provided to help these children. A child with Aphasia or Dyslexia is often exceptionally bright but unable to communicate or read. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are important. After careful evaluation and diagnosis, treatment can achieve remarkable verbal and reading improvement, sometimes in a matter of months.

The children gain confidence and skill with each lesson. It's a warming experience to watch their progress and to read the grateful letters from their parents. There are no bars of race, color, or creed. Ages range from 3-21 years. Regretfully, we can only provide services to children with speech language disorders. We reserve the right to decline services.

Presently, there are 170 Clinics, Centers, or Programs in the Southern Jurisdiction providing services to over 30,000 children a year. The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Program began in Denver, Colorado, in the early 1950's.

Through the dedication of California Scottish Rite Masons, there are now 15 SCOTTISH RITE CHILDHOOD LANGUAGE CENTERS in operation in California.

Center Volunteers

Our retired members and the ladies' associations of the temples have an active role in our Language Centers. Volunteer time and help are always welcome:

  • to make the children's therapy materials, e.g. picture books, and to furnish toys for the waiting room
  • to raise funds for equipment and operating costs
  • secretarial and telephone help is always needed

Dynamic Freedoms

The Foundation will subsidize the efforts of the Valleys in California to distribute to the elementary and secondary school students these fine books on Americanism. Each year dedicated brethren deliver thousands of books throughout the public education system without cost to the schools.
